Perak UPB FC was an ailing football club sponsored by the Malaysian United Plantations Board (UPB). They were poised to "go the way of the dinosaur" before MyTeam's chairman Khairy Jamaluddin decided to take over the club and form a base for MyTeam.
The name UPB-MyTeam FC was adopted upon UPB FC's management's request. It is said that the name UPB-MyTeam FC may only be used for a season, though, as the club might revert to renaming itself MyTeam MyTeam was created as a motley bunch of football players coached by ex-Malaysian footballer Serbegeth Singh. MyTeam took on the Malaysian national side in an exhibition match on May 28 2006, losing 1-2. The team's selection and progress was followed by the Malaysian public through a reality TV show. MyTeam was subsequently invited to join the Malaysian Premier League for the 2007 season and, after merging with the existing club Perak UPB FC, is now playing in the league under the name UPB-MyTeam FC.
